Description

This is one of the easiest baked desserts to make.A crumble can be made sweet or savoury , depending on the ingredients used, although the sweet version is more common. The sweet variety usually contains fruit topped with a crumbly mixture of butter, flour, and sugar. A savoury version uses meat, vegetables and a sauce for the filling, with cheese replacing sugar. Crumble is baked in an oven until the topping is crisp. The sweet variety is often served with custard, cream or ice cream. The savoury variety can be served along with vegetables.

Note

1) I used Granny Smith apple. Any other apple can be used. Granny Smith apple has, light green skin and a crisp, juicy flesh. They are commonly used in baking.
2) Usually crumble uses flour, but we have substituted it with oats. Also white sugar is replaced with brown sugar,making it much more healthier. If brown sugar is not available, use ordinary sugar.
3) I used a 7 inch * 7 inch square baking dish.

1  CupQuick cooking porridge oats
4  Tbsp.Brown sugar /demerera sugar
1  Tsp.Cinnamon powder
30  Gms.Chilled saltless butter diced
FILLING
350  Gms.Apple
2  Tsp.Lime juice
1  Tsp.Cinnamon powder
5  Tbsp.Light brown sugar / demerera sugar
2  PinchesNutmeg powder
2  Tsp.Grated lemon rind

Method

1) Peel core and cut apple into thin slices. Add lemon juice to the cut apples to prevent discoloration..
2) Mix together sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg & lemon rind for filling. Keep this aside for 30 minutes.
3) Mix oats, sugar& cinnamon. Add butter & crumble the mixture with your finger tips or pastry blender. It should resemble bread crumbs.
4) In a pie / baking dish , arrange apple slices. 5) Add mixed filling ingredients on top. 6) Spread oat mixture on top of that. Press mixture evenly on top.
7) Bake in a preheated oven at 200 C for about 25-30 minutes. Crumble should be brown on top.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with icecream, custard or whipped cream. It can also be served on its own. Crumbles tastes good when served warm from the oven.
